Your college application is extremely important, because it will be your future college’s first ever impression of you. Many first time college students tend to make the same mistakes on college applications. Here is a list of them so that you are aware of them and, more importantly, so that you can avoid making them yourself.

Failure to follow directions. As obvious as following the directions provided may seem, an impressive amount of college students mess this one up. Perhaps they have done an application for a different college and think knowing how to do one means knowing how to do them all. perhaps they’re in a big hurry, and skimmed over the instructions. Whatever your excuse is, it’s not a good excuse. Read the instructions and try to follow them to the letter to make the best first impression possible.

Misspellings and bad grammar. It’s not uncommon for first-time college students to misspell things when handwriting, because they don’t have the convenience of a spell checker right there to cover for their inability to spell a particular word. Always proofread your college applications; type up the handwritten parts if necessary just to spell check them. Your level of education now is an important factor in deciding whether to accept you into a college!

Illegible handwriting. it goes without saying that the colelge can’t consider you if they can’t read your application.

Turning the application in late. This is perhaps the worst blunder you can make on a college application, short of misspelling the name of the college itself. Neither are acceptable if you want to be admitted — check and double check your application!

Test anxiety affects all types of people. Whether you get straight As otherwise but always get low test scores, or you slack off on studying and then panic when the test papers are handed out, test anxiety is defined as anxiety about a test being so great that it affects your performance on that test.

If you find yourself drawing a blank when you come to a question you know you studied for, getting sweaty palms during a test, having difficulty staying on track during studying for or taking a test, or all of the above, you have test anxiety.

Coping with test anxiety is mostly about attitude. As with any form of anxiety, the only real way to “fix” test anxiety is to calm down and talk yourself through things. Repeat positive mantras to yourself, such as “I can do this”, and try not to tell yourself negative things like “I’m going to bomb this test”. Ignore the other students, and try not to think about the fact that the test is timed; just look at the first question and focus on it. Don’t flip through the whole test, or you will start thinking of the questions ahead when you need to focus on the first one. Breath, relax, and focus.

When you narrow your focus down to each question individually, you are effectively turning what looks like a big obstacle — the whole test — into small, manageable obstacles that you can deal with one by one. This is the same mentality that drives people who have busy schedules to make checklists. When it’s broken into smaller pieces, any obstacle looks less intimidating.

There are many lists out there about whether online or on campus college provides a better academic experience. As with anything, each of these educational options has pros and cons. Ultimately, which kind of college you take depends upon what your learning style is, and also what your schedule is like. Here are some reasons to choose online or on campus college.

Online college is best for:

People who are working full time in addition to taking college courses

People who learn better at a slower pace

People who absorb information better in text form

People with test anxiety

People who don’t live within commute distance of the college of their choice

People who aren’t confident about their handwriting

People who do not find socializing to be an important aspect of their college time

On campus college is best for:

People who learn better on a structured set schedule

People who absorb information better when someone explains it firsthand or demonstrates how to do it

People who don’t communicate well in text

People who live close enough to commute to the college of their choice

People who find socializing to be an important aspect of their college time

People who want to participate in physical college activities, such as sports

People who are not computer savvy or internet savvy

The quality of your college education depends on you picking the option that best fits your needs. Both online and on campus college can provide high quality education, but you will utilize your educational opportunities best if you look at your own learning style before you choose. Some colleges offer online and on campus classes.

Being able to take online classes is great because it gives students flexibility with their schedule. It is possible to work a full-time job and still pursue a degree. It takes a lot of dedication and perseverance, however, to take online classes. Here are some basic tips on how to be successful.

Set aside time each day to work on your online class and study. It is very difficult to catch up if you fall behind, so having a specific time when you can work will ensure that you are able to complete your class.

Send an email to your course instructor the instant you have questions. This way, your teacher will have enough time to respond to your questions before your assignment is due.

Learn how to use the online portal effectively. Online classes at eLearners use a system that anyone can learn.

Do not put off assignments until the last minute. You usually lose a lot of points when you turn an assignment in late, and sometimes late assignments are not even accepted.

Always study for tests and quizzes like you would for a traditional class. Online tests and quizzes can be more difficult than those you find in actual classrooms because the teacher knows you have the Internet and other resources to help you.

You can be successful with online classes, if you use these basic tips. It is possible for anyone to get an education, so don’t think you can’t do it. You can get financial aid and any other help you need to accomplish your goals. An education counselor can help you, too.

Probably the most important social question you’ll face when you arrive at college revolves around memberships. Specifically, should you join a fraternity? At its most basic, a ‘frat’ is an organization centered on the idea that networking, teambuilding, and leadership are all key subjects. There are pros and cons to this question just as there are to almost every inquiry. Let’s take a look at why you would, or wouldn’t, try to join up.

Pros to Fraternity Membership:

Instantly upon acceptance, you’ve got a band of brothers who’ve got your back despite the situation in which you manage to find yourself. And it’s always good to have people on your side, especially in a foreign environment such as a college campus.

Fraternity membership is key to career success, as the fraternal relationships extend beyond master degree attainment and graduation. In fact, there’s a good chance that someone making at least one stage of the hiring decisions at the business which receives your resume will be a member of a fraternity.

Some people attend college out of a sense of duty to their parents, who expect them to. Some are eager to go and get the credentials necessary to get a high-paying career. Then there are those who have neither obligations or a future career in mind — the people who attend college simply for their own personal enrichment.

There is something to be said for higher learning, whether you need it for a career or not. Perhaps you’re fascinated by the idea of being able to upgrade or even assemble your own computer from parts, so you enroll in a college IT program to become A+ certified. Or what if you have always enjoyed mathematical work? Perhaps you should enroll in a college course or two about advanced math just for the knowledge of it.

Not only will pursuing your personal interests in such a solid way make you feel great about your outlook on life, but your newfound skills could lead you in different career directions than you might have predicted. What if you put together computers so well that friends start paying you to make them custom computers? What if your fascination with calculus leads to a job tutoring others who aren’t such naturals at math?

Going back to college can be just the change of pace and social boost that middle-aged or elderly individuals need to feel better about their current situations, too. People of all ages attend college these days — you’re never too old to learn something fun and new.

College students have an academic advisor — often a professor at the college — to consult about their academic schedule and plans. What this means for you as a student is that you can schedule which classes you will take ahead of time, and predict how long it will take you to complete your degree requirements and graduate.

Whether you are in college for an Associate of Applied Science degree or your Bachelor’s, communication with your advisor is vital for an efficient schedule. If you don’t contact your advisor much, you should — they are a resource that you should take advantage of, and often very helpful in helping you to plan which classes will suit your current schedule.

One of the concerns that people have when enrolling in college online is that they will not have access to an advisor. This simply isn’t true — advisors are available at online colleges, and in fact you can do your advising online even if you attend classes on campus! Online advising typically takes place via email; some more tech-savvy colleges may do advising via video chat programs such as Skype, if your own computer and internet are sufficient to allow it.

When communicating via email, bear in mind that text can come across as cold or unfriendly, especially when using formal language, even if the sender doesn’t intend to come across that way. Tone is hard to convey with text, so remember that your advisor is there to help you, and is not scolding you or trying to come across as caustic. Some people aren’t as good at “text tone” as others.
